چکیده

It is well established that renal acid excretion can be influenced by certain tubular mechanisms that operate independently of systemic acid-base equilibrium. Thus, the stimulus for sodium reabsorption (1, 2), the competition between potassium and hydrogen ions for secretion (3), and the penetrating ability of anions present in the glomerular filtrate (4-6) are factors known to affect acid excretion. It is not clear, however, whether the process of urine acidification is influenced by the quantities of solute and water being excreted by the kidney. Although acid excretion has been measured during various types of diuresis (7-11), most studies were not specifically designed to answer this question. In the present study, the effects of acute increases in either solute or water excretion on the simultaneous excretion of acid were examined in man. To investigate the effects of solute and water separately, water excretion was limited as much as possible during solute diuresis, and changes in solute excretion were avoided during water diuresis. Control observations on acid excretion were made in nondiuretic subjects in the recumbent position. The results indicate that diuresis induced by nonelectrolyte solutes (hypertonic urea or mannitol) causes a significant fall in urine pH and an increase in ammonium and titratable acid excretion in recumbent subjects. In contrast, water diuresis had no consistent effect on over-all acid ex-

Association between Amylase Excretion Fraction and Acute Renal Transplant Rejection in Pediatrics

Background and Objectives: Serum amylase increases and its excretion fraction decreases in patients with renal failure. Excretion fraction can be used as a diagnostic way in individuals with acute renal transplant rejection. In this study, the association between amylase excretion fraction and acute renal transplant rejection, was investigated in pediatrics.   Methods: in this case - control s...

Effect of protein ingestion on urinary dopamine excretion. Evidence for the functional importance of renal decarboxylation of circulating 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine in man.

Since dietary protein increases urinary dopamine (DA) excretion in animals, this study was undertaken to assess the role of DA production in the acute changes in renal function following protein ingestion in man. Excretion of DA, sodium, potassium, water, solute, and creatinine were measured in six normal men in 30-min intervals over 5 h after oral ingestion of protein and/or carbidopa, an inhi...

Combination Therapy with Losartan and α-Tocopherol in Acute Ureteral Obstruction-Induced Renal Excretory Dysfunction and Acidification Defect

Background: Previous study by the authors showed that a-tocopherol prevents oxidative stress but would not improve depressed excretory variables in post-obstructed kidney (POK) after release of 24-h unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). This study is a supplementary investigation on the effects of a-tocopherol combined with an antagonist of angiotensin-II type-1 (AT1) receptor on renal dysfunc...

The effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells on renal function and histopathology in a rat model of ischemia-reperfusion induced acute kidney injury

Objective(s): It has been shown that adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) have protective effects in acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was conducted to assess the therapeutic effects of AD-MSC in rats subjected to acute kidney injury by 45 min of renal ischemia followed by 48 hr of reperfusion (I/R). Materials and Methods:...

Studies on the renal concentrating mechanism. II. Effect of small acute changes in solute excretion.

The renal concentrating mechanism is considered to be limited by a maximal urine osmolal concentration or a maximal osmotic urine/plasma (U/P) ratio at low rates of solute excretion (1). When solute excretion is increased by the administration of large osmotic loads to hvdropenic subjects urine osmolality decreases (2-4). This decrease has recently been ascribed to the limitation imposed by the...
